High spiking fevers and not much else.  No runny nose.  No cough.  No throwing up.  Roseola is a pediatrician’s diagnostic challenge.  What IS making this child so ill?  As soon as the child’s week-long fever ends, here comes a rash.  Now the picture becomes clear.  It sounds like roseola, also known as sixth disease.  Fortunately, its probably not as serious as you might think, given the high fevers.  The condition is caused by a virus so antibiotics are not needed, and it can often be treated from home.
